How 2024 Sounded: My Most-Played Tracks
Some songs from 2024 that are worth checking out
So as 2024 comes to a close I think it was a pretty decent year for music. Below are a list of tunes I was listening to that I would recommend checking out. Created a private playlist of most of these songs below on Spotify for those interested.
HIP HOP:
I recorded a little section for the end of year Crate 808 podcast where I discussed my favourite albums and songs from the year. Here’s a link below to that piece and also some of the songs I discuss:
SHAD “Shoes”: SHAD flexing all over my favourite beat of the year
Blu & Evidence “The Land”: This is my most played song of the year - hands down. Blu kills it as always and this beat fucking KNOCKS!
NON HIP HOP:
Lynda Dawn “11th Hour” - reminds me of those classic soul jams from the early 70’s. It’s just a cracker of a tune that’s beautifully arranged with gorgeous lead and background vocals.
Tierra Whack “ Shower Song” - my ear worm song of the year. Just super fun, relatable, infectious and catchy. Great video too.
Cosmo Sheldrake “Old Ocean” - amazing sounds and production going on here. It just sounds so great with such incredible attention to detail.
Jordan Rakei “Freedom” - think I came across this from the
weekly music posts (well worth signing up for). Really well put together song that just does everything at the right time.Brainstory “Nobody But You” - this is just great
Silas Short “ILIKEU” - crazy off the grid drum swing going on here surrounded by vintage synth sounds and a cool as fuck vocal. Another Stones Throw sure shot.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC:
So each year I listen to instrumental music more than anything else. This year had a lot of great beat tapes as always and some lovely other tracks such as these:
Okonski “Exitus” - killer banging jazz trio track with hints of NY State Of Mind by Nas during the verses.
13th Ward Social Club “Black Helicopters” - a modern funk instrumental version of the classic independent 90’s rap tune by Non - Phixon. Yes fucking please!!!
BADBADNOTGOOD “Eyes On Me” - this is simply amazing. The bass groove is insane, the rhythm changes and everything just sounds so so SO good. I love this!!!!
Tony Njoku “La Ruee” - a beautiful piano piece sprinkled with lots of lovely little sonic flourishes.
Amanda Whiting “ Facing The Sun” - lush hypnotic jazz harp piece.
Glass Beams “Black Sand” - modern Middle Eastern infused funk. Shit bangs.
Hermanos Gutierrez “Bario Hustle” - my favourite song off a really good album. This is just a beautiful Latin American groove played by two brothers who are completely in-sync with each other.
Rose Noir “ Brooks” - so nice
Madlib “ One For Biz” instrumental - perfect piano loop
