Oddisee “Paralyzed”
So this songs REALLY does it for me, goosebumps every time. It is perfect to me. Obviously Oddisee takes a well known piano loop here but its just so beautiful how it juxtaposes it with his raps and flows. Hook is really tasteful too. Oddisee is one of my favourite hip hop artists of all time. Stellar discography, amazing producer, killer MC, voice to die for and rarely makes any poor choices. Just a really smart operator. Just one of those songs that always makes me press repeat.
The Webs "Hard To Break a Habit”
Produced by the amazing Lou Courtney, this so is cooooooold. Soul music like this is absolute fodder for hip hop producers and its no surprised that this has been flipped tons of times. The vocals on here deliver such emotion and are complemented with such rich backing vocals. While The Webs may not be as widely recognized as some other soul groups from the same era, "Hard to Break a Habit" stands as a testament to their contribution to soul music.
luna li “baby shred” (2021)
So I came across Luna Li on Instagram as this musician who makes lil music videos of her playing all the instruments including the harp! I am a sucker for the harp. She is insanely talented and this track is my jam. What’s not to like here?
YC The Cynic - “More and More Feat. Soul Khan, Von Pea & Sene”
So this is an incredible posse cut that is probably forgotten by most. YC The Cynic (now Kemba) pulls together a killer line up and everyone brings their A-game. Was a big fan of Sene’s work around this time too as he was dabbling in RnB stuff too. Also shout out to J57 for a perfect posse rap beat.
Bob & Gene “Gotta Find A Way”
This is a soul track by the American duo Bob & Gene. This song was released in 1971 on the Mo Do label and featured on their album, "If This World Were Mine," which was re-released in 2007 by the mighty Daptone Records. If you are not familiar with that label I highly suggest checked out their catalogue. This whole album is great by the way and features a nice mix of soulful ballads and upbeat tracks.
Reminder that my latest album ‘BLIP’ with
is available now with some vinyl still available on Get Down (USA) and HHV (Europe) amongst others sites. You can get the digital copy from my Bandcamp below.
