Mr. Live “Supa Dupa”
A 1996 independent hip hop gem here on Fondle ‘Em Records which was a label founded and owned by legend Robert "Bobbito" Garcia. So much creativity and raw talent on show here by Mr.Live and as Guru says ….”It’s mostly the voice”! Just a slept on cut that deserves more ears.
Matthew Larkin Cassell “In My Life”
This 1977 song features a real cool laid-back, soulful groove and incorporates a really smart arrangement. Its got a really timeless feel and is something I revisit quite frequently. Highly recommended.
Swarvy “Elderberry”
Swarvy is a really interesting producer with quite a varied catalog including his heralded work with Street Corner Music and rapper Loji (who is dope also!). I absolutely love his early batch of beat tapes and this track here is just a beauty. It’s perfect, a cracking groove that I could just zone out to for hours.
ShrapKnel “Bogdan Interlude”
So ShrapKnel (Curly Castro & Prem Rock) just released a new album entirely produced by
and its an absolute beauty. Controller 7 is my guy and he works wonders here creating a whole world and sound for ShrapKnel to do their thing. Really feel like this album shows the power of a one producer album in hip hop. Believe this album will be on most ‘best 2024 hip hop album’ lists that are worth paying attention to.Caoi de Barra “Treehouse”
Ireland represent! So this was easily one of my favourite songs from 2023 by Irish singer songwriter Caoi de Barra. Started her career as part of the band Wyvern Lingo, Caoi has recently been pursuing a solo career. I’ve seen her live before and she is incredibly gifted - whether that’s singing, playing guitar or the drums. This is just a beautifully well written song which touches on the housing crisis we currently have in Ireland. I think the melodies and arrangement are absolutely super and just gives me the feels. Love the super creative video too.
Reminder that my latest album ‘BLIP’ with
is available now with some vinyl still available on Get Down (USA) and HHV (Europe) amongst others sites. You can get the digital copy from my Bandcamp below.
